Dutch police have arrested a 27 year old man from Vlaardingen in connection with an explosion at a barbershop on the Liesveld, a blast that damaged the facade and several windows in August. Nobody was hurt, and the scissors, presumably, survived. The suspect is being held under restrictions, meaning he may speak only to his lawyer; a 19 year old local man was arrested for the same explosion earlier.
The case is part of a remarkable local series. Since May 2025 several barbershops in Vlaardingen have faced vandalism, explosions and, in the night of 15 to 16 October, gunfire at a shop on the same street. Police and prosecutors are investigating whether the incidents are connected, and talk of a price war between barbers is one of the theories doing the rounds; no motive has been established.
The incident highlights a growing trend in urban dispute resolution, where business disagreements are increasingly settled with explosives rather than polite conversation. Mayor Frederik Zevenbergen has repeatedly closed targeted premises and called the attacks cowardly, while residents are forced to accept that a routine haircut can now come with structural risk to the building. The situation illustrates a commercial climate in which keeping your shop window intact has become a daily operational challenge.
