The global implementation of artificial intelligence has reached a completely predictable financial conclusion. Despite breathless corporate promises that algorithmic automation would democratise human productivity, a new study by UNCTAD, the United Nations trade and development agency, followed the money inside one of the most coveted machines of the age, an Nvidia AI server. The workers who assemble the hardware capture about 4.3 percent of the value that could be traced.

Up to 68 percent of it is pure profit after costs and taxes, and most of that lands at Nvidia. The technology itself is eagerly adopted across countless industries by middle managers who sincerely believe they are taking part in a historic transformation. In practice many of them are installing sophisticated software designed to reduce their own labour costs, while the surplus flows neatly into the portfolios of the existing technology giants.

The revolution is functioning flawlessly. Silicon Valley sells the illusion of a distributed digital utopia while quietly executing a consolidation of capital that would impress any nineteenth century railway baron. The entire system rests on the polite fiction that giving a machine the ability to think will somehow accidentally result in a fairer distribution of wealth.

What actually happened
